Patrick Grady’s SNP membership suspended, as police inquiry continues

An SNP MP who was suspended from the House of Commons for misconduct is being investigated by police in connection with an alleged sexual assault, it is understood.

Patrick Grady has suspended his party membership and will not be a SNP member of Parliament as detectives carry out inquiries, a spokesperson confirmed.

The Metropolitan Police said it had received an allegation from a third party of sexual assault reported to have taken place at Folgate Street in London in October 2016.

The Glasgow North MP was suspended from parliament for two days after he was found to have made an unwanted sexual advance towards a teenage member of SNP staff.

Both Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford have faced questions over how the allegations were handled after scathing criticism from the victim.

A spokesperson for the Met said: “On Wednesday, June 22, police received an allegation of sexual assault that is said to have taken place in October 2016 at commercial premises in Folgate Street, E1.

“The report was submitted online by a third party.

“Officers will now be making inquiries, including contacting the alleged victim, in order to assess what further action is required.”

An SNP spokesperson said: “Patrick Grady is stepping away from his party membership while the police inquiry continues.”
