Leigh Griffiths, a former striker for Scotland and Celtic, has been questioned by police who are looking into sports wagering.
The 32-year-old footballer confirmed that on Thursday at 7am, police arrived at his South Lanarkshire residence.
He was taken to Glasgow’s London Road police station by officers.
Griffiths said he wasn’t detained and has asserted he did nothing wrong. He declined to respond to questions about the inquiry.
Police Scotland carried out a “pre-planned” operation on December 1st, according to a spokesperson.
The force issued a statement, saying: “Following a pre-planned police operation on Thursday, December 1, three men aged 37, 35 and 32 were arrested in the Bothwell, Bonnyrigg and Airdrie areas in connection with an investigation into alleged gambling incidents in sport.
“All three men were released without charge pending further enquiries.”
With Celtic, Leigh Griffiths won seven league championships, three Scottish Cups, and four League Cups.
By hitting two free kicks for Scotland’s national team against England at Hampden in 2017, the striker cemented his position in Scottish football mythology.
He has been working out with Livingston during his six-month absence from a club.
