Lanarkshire MP to lead universal basic income debate in Westminster

Lanark and Hamilton East MP Angela Crawley will discuss what UBI could help reduce poverty and inequality

Lanark and Hamilton East MP Angela Crawley will lead a debate in Westminster on the merits of introducing a universal basic income (UBI).

On Wednesday, June 15, MPs will be given the chance to debate what UBI could look like and how it could help reduce poverty and inequality in a debate in Westminster Hall.

Previous studies in Finland and Germany have found that UBI can help reduce poverty levels and help people back into work.

In Scotland, a feasibility study into a Citizens’ Basic Income was conducted prior to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Commenting, Lanark and Hamilton East MP Angela Crawley told Lanarkshire Live: “The benefits of a universal basic income far outweigh the costs so it is right that MPs should debate how such a scheme could look in the UK.

“If done properly, it would have the potential to save taxpayers’ money by getting rid of needless bureaucracy and the cruel and costly benefits sanctions regime.

“Previous studies have shown that a universal basic income could reduce the level of poverty as well as motivating people to get back into work.
